Early in the game, you want to develop you pieces. A developed pieces is a piece that has been moved out of its starting position to control, attack, or defend. Simply put, developing your piece is making that piece more effective.
Controlling the center is very important, mostly in the early and middle game. Controlling the center means moving your pieces to either attack, occupy, or defend squares in the center. Here is a picture below.
